Hey there, time traveller!

This week, while dreaming up column ideas on social media, the topic of shelter for cats came up.

My cousin Joanne’s daughter, Diana Heppner Stevens, came through big time. She even sent a photo.

“We built one, call it a catio, and the only item we had to purchase was the pet door connecting the two,” Diana says.

See, that’s why it’s good to keep scrap lumber around. What a great idea, your feline friends can enjoy the great outdoors without leaving surprises in the neighbour’s garden. Genuis!

A catio is the purrfect way to solve the indoor-outdoor dilemma and keep your cat safe, healthy and happy.

“Our female loves her catio and spent much of the summer out there, while our male, who is large and lazy, visits once in a while,” Diana says.

Large and lazy? Is there a TV out there? Hello! We men. How we do suffer…

You can build your own catio relatively easily, or you can hire a local carpenter to construct one. A quick Google search shows catios ranging from nothing more than a screened in window box to elaborate designs that cost about as much as those tiny houses that are all the rage.

Which brings me to my old friend Rene Jamieson (she’s a lot older than me), who also had a great column idea. As much as we love to swap barbs — even I’ve got to admit her energy-efficient tiny homes column idea is pure gold. Give the people what they want. Besides, I’m thinking I may want to live in one of those tiny homes one day, with a gigantic heated toy and hobby shed standing beside it.

So, that’s the subject of next week’s Mustard on Everything! Energy-efficient tiny homes! If you live in one, send me a message and tell me all about it.

I want mine to include a four-storey tower, with an elevator to haul my aging body up there.

Why a tower?

First, for the view, and also just a precaution against any tsunamis that might sneak up on us some day. You can never be too careful.
