WHAT started as a routine flight from Winnipeg to Oxford House late Sunday afternoon ended in an emergency landing in Gimli.

There were no injuries to anyone on the Perimeter Aviation flight, which carried nine passengers, RCMP said Sunday.

Smoke aboard a Perimeter Metro two-engine commuter airplane forced the emergency landing.

An Emergency Response team was waiting at the Gimli Airport.

Peter Hildebrand of the Transportation Safety Board said 10 people were on board the flight, but that nobody was hurt.

“It’s not something that you expect to happen all the time,” said Hilebrand. “But, it does happen.”

He said it’s still unclear what caused the smoke.

An official with the Winnipeg Airports Authority said Sunday night that the decision to land in Gimli rather than return to Winnipeg would have been left to the pilot’s discretion, in consultation with Nav Canada.

The plane was scheduled to be flown back to Winnipeg late Sunday night.

The Transportation Safety Board and Perimeter will begin an investigation today into what happened. Passengers on board the flight were taken to a hotel in the Gimli area for the night.
