Hey there, time traveller!

CONSTRUCTION has begun in North Kildonan on a new Autopac service centre — the last of three new facilities the public insurer is building in Winnipeg this year.
The projects were first announced 15 months ago, but construction began in April in the city’s south end.
“This has been a very busy time for us,” said Manitoba Public Insurance spokesman Brian Smiley.
The North Kildonan claims centre is being built on Gateway Road, south of Springfield Road and adjacent to the North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church. Construction has been ongoing at the other two sites — on Main Street and on Bison Drive at Barnes Street.
Smiley said the agency expects to stay within the budgeted estimate of $8 million to $10 million for each of the three facilities. All three should be completed by the end of the year or early in 2010. The new buildings are being constructed to environmental standards according to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
The new facilities will also be built in accordance with MPI’s new philosophy of complete customer service at all its claims centres, Smiley said. The new centre on Main Street will replace the claims centre on King Street, which cannot be expanded to become a full-service centre.
The sites in North Kildonan and Bison Drive were chosen because of population growth, Smiley said, noting those are the fastest growing sectors of Winnipeg. Smiley said MPI is proceeding with plans to build a new centre in Selkirk to replace the existing one, but construction there will not begin until 2011.
