Wins NDP leadership on a third ballot at hastily called

convention, replacing Howard Pawley who resigned after

losing a non-

confidence motion, and finds himself at the helm of a party fighting for its

survival.

 

April 26, 1988

First election as leader, NDP tumbles from government to 3rd place, dropping from 30 seats to 12 seats. Filmon-led Tories head a minority government.

Sept. 11, 1990

Loses again to Filmon Tories, but with 20 seats, leads NDP to Official Opposition status.

 

April 25, 1995

Third election as NDP leader, third loss to Filmon Tories, but increases number of NDP in legislature to 23.

 

Sept. 21, 1999

Fourth time lucky, finally defeats Gary Filmon and leads NDP to government, becoming Premier and NDP has 32 seats.

 

June 3, 2003

Wins second majority government, increasing number of elected NDP members to 35.

May 22, 2007

Only NDP leader to win three consecutive elections, and first premier to do so since Duff Roblin in 1966. Increases NDP majority to 36 seats.

 

August 27, 2009

Announces he will resign as party leader.
