People from Winnipeg’s Haitian community and local volunteers with Save the Children Canada are staking out The Forks Market this weekend to collect donations for Haiti earthquake relief. Donations will be accepted at the Save the Children booth Friday, Jan. 22 starting at 5 p.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday. Winnipeggers from Haiti will be there intermittently to answer questions about the situation in their former home.

Canadian Red Cross: www.redcross.ca/helpnow, or call toll free 1-800-418-1111 or visit any Red Cross office. Locally, donors can call the Winnipeg office at 1111 Portage Ave. at 1-866-685-4250. Cash donations can be dropped off at any of the city’s 26 fire halls, made out to the Canadian Red Cross Haitian relief effort.

Mennonite Central Committee: Call 261-6381 or toll-free 1-888-622-6337 or visit mcc.org. By mail: MCC, 134 Plaza Dr., Winnipeg, R3T 5K9. Be sure to designate donations Haiti Earthquake.

Foreign Affairs: Canadians seeking emergency consular assistance in the area should contact the Emergency Operations Centre or call 613-996-8885 collect. The Operations Centre of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Friends and relatives in Canada seeking information on Canadian citizens believed to be in the affected area should contact Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada at 1-800-387-3124.

Family News Network of the International Committee of the Red Cross: This site is designed to enable persons in Haiti and abroad to register the names of relatives with whom they are striving to restore contact. It is designed for missing persons in Haiti that are not Canadian citizens.

If persons seeking to restore contact with loved ones don’t have access to a computer or need help registering online they should contact Red Cross Restoring Family Links in Manitoba at 982-7340 for assistance.
