A decade after arsonists destroyed Steinbach’s landmark windmill, RCMP have charged two men.

"It’s a good day for Steinbach," RCMP Cpl. Sean Grunewald said Wednesday.

It was late at night on Oct. 22, 2000, when firefighters and police rushed to the Mennonite Heritage Village on Highway 12 — too late to save the burning windmill.

Steinbach's iconic windmill was destroyed by fire in 2000.

"The file was never closed. These two individuals were suspects at the time," Grunewald said. "Not enough evidence could be obtained."

Grunewald said the RCMP received information two weeks ago that led to the arrests. Police won’t reveal that information until the case comes to court, but they are not looking for any other suspects, he said.

The Mennonite Heritage Village rebuilt the $600,000 windmill within a year.

"The replacement is identical," said heritage village executive director Barry Dyck. "The windmill is not only a landmark to the community, it is an icon for Steinbach."

Two 30-year-old men, Kynan Patram of Mitchell and David Wiebe of Winnipeg, face one count of arson each. They’ve been released to appear in Steinbach court June 24.
