Police credit modern science for the arrest of an 18-year-old man in connection with four recent gropings of city women. Hours after the latest sexual assault Thursday, police said they used DNA evidence collected from an attack last month to break the case.
The latest groping happened Thursday at about 3:30 p.m. after police said a man on a bike grabbed a 49-year-old woman walking near Wolseley Avenue and Camden Place.
Officers took Curtis Leroy George into custody about three hours later.
“We put a rush on this,” said police spokesman Jason Michalyshen, who said there was an “urgency” to identify a potentially dangerous man.
Police said DNA gathered from an attack on a 28-year-old woman May 13 near Stapon Road and Reenders Drive helped officers link the incidents.
In that attack, a man came up behind the woman on foot, then grabbed her upper and lower body.
He simulated a sex act, before she fought him off and he fled.
Police said the suspect left something behind that was analyzed by forensics experts, a crucial piece of evidence that helped when reports of gropings emerged again.
Tuesday night, police said a young man on a bike grabbed a 31-year-old jogger near Ness Avenue and Sackville Street in St. James.
Late Wednesday night, a man on a bike groped a 41-year-old woman walking near Academy Road and Harrow Street after following her for blocks.
Police said the man they’ve arrested is known to police.
George was accused of sexually assaulting two women last October near Graham Avenue and Hargrave Street. The sexual assault charges were stayed, but he was convicted of two counts of assault, ordered to complete two years of probation and ordered to provide a DNA sample.
Michalyshen said police are continuing their investigation and encourage members of the public to come forward if they believe they have information that could help.
“This individual could likely have assaulted additional people that we’re not necessarily aware of,” he said.
George is being held at the remand centre.
He’s charged with four counts of sexual assault.
Anyone with information is asked to call 986-2857 or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477 (TIPS).
