2010 : Gary Rent, 33, was punched outside of Bar Italia, fell to the ground with “tremendous force,” according to his mother, and died in hospital the next day. A Bar Italia bouncer is facing a manslaughter charge.

2006: Russell Cook, 55, was hog-tied by staff after causing a disturbance in the lobby of the St. Regis Hotel. Cook suffered from heart disease and was in an agitated state at the time of his death. An inquest recommended security personnel working in licensed facilities receive formal training in proper restraint techniques and the dangers of using excessive force.

2004: James Ronald Hanson died of asphyxiation after an altercation with security staff outside The Beach nightclub. Three bouncers were cleared of manslaughter charges.

2004: Denis Vandal, brother of Winnipeg Coun. Dan Vandal, died of a brain injury after an altercation with a bouncer outside Silverado’s nightclub. Manslaughter charges against the bouncer were stayed.
