Flea market helps special-needs kids
A large flea market is being held to help children with special needs get therapy with horses. Manitoba Riding for the Disabled is holding the 12th annual Super Flea Market at Assiniboia Downs on Feb. 5 and 6. It features antiques, collectibles, crafts, second-hand treasures and more. Your vacation dream can help Dreams
Air Canada staff are holding a fundraiser for their annual Dreams Take Flight on Feb. 12. Open Your Heart to Dreams presents musical guest Highway 59 and features casino tables and a silent auction with a grand prize of two tickets anywhere Air Canada flies. Tickets are $20 and it is being held at the Canad Inns Destination Centre Polo Park from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Dreams Take Flight sees special-needs and socially challenged children get flown to Florida to spend a day at Disney World. Help women help women
Heather Bishop and Kaia Kater will sing and author Susie Moloney will speak at the Fort Garry Women’s Resource Centre FabFem fundraiser on Feb. 16. The fundraiser, to aid the organization that helps women engage in healthy life choices, is being held at the Gas Station Theatre, at 445 River Ave. It runs from 6:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tickets for the event, which cost $20 and include refreshments and lights snacks, can be purchased by calling 477-1123.
Chance to win a million — and help hospital
There’s still time to win a cool $1 million and help the St. Boniface General Hospital. The grand prize for the St. Boniface Hospital 2011 MegaMillion Lotto is being drawn on March 17 and tickets are on sale now. The lotto’s early-bird draw for a 2011 CLS 550 Mercedes-Benz plus $7,500 cash or $100,000 cash will be drawn on March 3. Tickets are $100 each or three for $250 and can be bought by fax at 231-0041, by phone at 944-7150, by going to www.stbonifacemegamillion.ca/wp/ to buy online, or by going in person to the St. Boniface General Hospital Foundation office on the main floor of the hospital. Blimey — London’s calling to help gallery
You might not be able to get to the actual Jolly Old England, but you can go to the next-closest thing by attending the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Art and Soul: London Calling fundraiser. The annual Art and Soul event — this year with a British theme — is a closed-door four-storey exclusive party featuring gourmet hors d’oeuvres, unique costume attire, exhibition tours, live DJs and music on every floor. Tickets are $50 or $450 for a group of 10 and are available at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
CFL star bowling for dollars
Donovan Alexander may play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but he’ll be helping local children at his annual Heart Bowl for Variety the Children’s Charity of Manitoba. The second annual fundraiser is being held at LaVerendrye Bowling Lanes at 614 Rue Desmeurons St., on Feb. 26 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. It’s free to watch and you can buy tickets for the silent auction with all proceeds to Variety. Alexander himself was treated at the Variety Children’s Heart Centre for a heart condition when he was a baby. For more information, call Nancy at 982-1055.
Workshop helps parents of special-needs kids
Liz van Reenen, owner of I Am Accessible — Beyond Limits, will help parents of children with disabilities see the positives on Feb. 15. The workshop, being put on by Community Living Manitoba, features van Reenen, who was born with cerebral palsy and also owns her own communications business. It’s being held at CLM’s offices at 120 Maryland St., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Cost is $10. To register, call Alison at 786-1607 or email aduffy@aclmb.ca
Auction to help homeless
The Colours of Hope Art Exhibit and Auction Event will help Siloam Mission assist our local homeless. An auction of works by Jordan Miller, Jackie Traverse and Patrick Ross, which costs $30 to attend, is being held at The Edge Gallery, 611 Main St., on Feb. 24. But a free exhibit by people helped by Siloam is also being featured at the same gallery from Feb. 18 to 24. Tickets for the auction can be bought at Hull’s Family Bookstores at 372 Graham Ave.
TV chef cooking for wishes
One of the country’s top chefs is coming here to help the local Children’s Wish organization. Chef David Adjey, the star of television’s Restaurant Makeover and The Opener, as well as the author of Deconstructing the Dish, will give kitchen and cooking tips and talk about culinary trends among other things at the Fort Garry hotel on Feb. 9. The event also features deluxe hors d’oeuvres, raffles, and prizes. Doors open at 5 p.m. and tickets cost $30 in advance or $35 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at Rockstar Entertainment at 890-3882.
