Worst hockey arena? This guy should know

As a hockey player from peewee to junior and as a current Level 4 hockey official, I have been in every rink in Winnipeg (as well as 90 per cent of rural rinks in the province).

Here is my opinion in regards to your survey:

BEST ARENA: Dakota — well maintained facility. good sized rooms, decent ice, multipurpose facility.

WORST ARENA: Charles A. Barbour — ice size dimensions are inadequate for any level of hockey below atom. The spectator areas are tucked into the corners, the dressing rooms are suitable for a seven-player team. As for the lobby, if you can carry your bag through the that area after a game without apologizing 10 times, I would be shocked.

WARMEST: Max Bell — you can watch as a spectator at any time of the year with a fall jacket and still feel comfortable. As a player, you’ll be soaked from head to toe in sweat after the first period.

COLDEST: Silverstone — although Dutton and Glenwood aren’t a far off second. Not too sure if it’s the high humidity in that place, but man is it cold.

BEST DRESSING ROOMS: Gateway — large square rooms, easy to fit a 21-man team in there. Decent shower facilities.

WORST DRESSING ROOMS: Charles A. Barbour.

BEST FOOD: Gateway

BEST VIEWING AREA: Eric Coy — stands are slightly raised and they are tight to the boards.

BEST LOBBY: Dakota — large, several food/drink options, viewing windows to the arena.

BEST ARENA: MTS Iceplex

WORST ARENA: Kinsmen Allard

WARMEST: Max Bell

COLDEST: St. Norbert

BEST DRESSING ROOMS: MTS Iceplex by far! No one is close.

WORST DRESSING ROOMS: (TIE) Charles A. Barbour, Canlan Highlander, Kinsmen Allard

BEST FOOD: MTS Iceplex (expensive)

BEST VIEWING AREA: MTS Iceplex (heated bleachers)

BEST LOBBY: MTS Iceplex

You guys should add two more categories. Best Ice (Max Bell) and Worst Ice (tie — Kinsmen Allard and Canlan Highlander)

— Jeff
