PREMIER Greg Selinger’s approval rating among Manitobans is rising, although it still stands at well below 50 per cent.
Selinger’s performance as premier got a thumbs-up from 34 per cent of Manitobans in a mid-February online survey by Vision Critical/Angus Reid. That compares with a 28 per cent approval rating in November and 27 per cent a year ago.
Meanwhile, an even greater number of those surveyed — 38 per cent — said they disapproved of the Manitoba premier’s performance, while 28 per cent said they were not sure.
Mario Canseco, vice-president of communications with Vision Critical, said the six-percentage-point rise for Selinger is good news for Manitoba’s NDP.
“I think he’s essentially becoming more well-known,” he said of Selinger, who was Gary Doer’s finance minister for a decade before becoming premier in October 2009 after an NDP leadership race.
A Probe Research poll conducted on behalf of the Free Press late last year showed Manitoba’s Progressive Conservatives ahead of the governing NDP in popular support (42% to 38%). PC support was identical to what it had been in September, while the percentage of voters backing the NDP fell slightly (from 40%). Nearly one-half of those surveyed by Probe (49%) also believed it was time for a new government in Manitoba, while one-third (34%) said the NDP should be re-elected to a fourth term.
Vision Critical/Angus Reid surveys the popularity of Canada’s premiers each quarter. The online method is criticized by some pollsters who say it is not a true sample survey.
With the departure of Newfoundland premier Danny Williams last year, Saskatchewan’s Brad Wall now leads Vision Critical’s popularity parade with a 63 per cent approval rating followed by new Newfoundland premier Kathy Dunderdale at 55 per cent. Quebec’s Jean Charest continues to trail the pack with a 13 per cent approval rating.
