Police have arrested a 27-year-old man after officers stopped a car that contained dangerous chemicals — allegedly for making meth — prompting a lengthy search by emergency officials in hazardous material protective suits.

Officers stopped the car near Pembina Highway and Ducharme Avenue, after police noticed a man driving erratically late Monday night. Insurance on the car had lapsed, said police, and the driver was wanted on a warrant issued last week.

The man also appeared to be intoxicated when police stopped him, said police.

After police searched the car and found the chemicals, the WPS clandestine lab unit and Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service hazardous materials unit were called in.

By Tuesday morning, emergency officials in protective suits were carefully removing items from the sedan with Manitoba licence plates.

The car was parked in the lot of a Mac’s convenience store on Pembina Highway in St. Norbert.

“The storage of the chemicals could have proved fatal for not only the operator of this vehicle, but anyone else who may have come across it, or an explosion was certainly a possibility in this case,” said police spokeswoman Const. Natalie Aitken. The man also allegedly had small amounts of meth and a knife when he was arrested, said police.

The trunk contained large plastic bottles, boxes, and a metal cylinder that resembled a scuba tank or fire extinguisher. police said.

Staff at the Mac’s store were asked to leave around midnight, said district manager David Newton on Tuesday morning.

Police said Tuesday afternoon that a 27-year-old man with no fixed address was facing charges of possessing a controlled drug or substance (methamphetamine) and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The man was also facing two charges related to failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking, and various Highway Traffic Act charges. The man was in police custody Tuesday.
