DEMOCRACY seems to be alive and well in Manitoba, with the 2011 provincial election boasting the largest number of candidates in recent memory.
Elections Manitoba reported Tuesday that 209 candidates — including a record 32 Greens — had registered by the 1 p.m. deadline.
The NDP, the Progressive Conservatives and the Liberals are all fielding a full slate — 57 — of candidates. There will also be five Communists and one independent on this year’s ballot.
Elections Manitoba spokeswoman Mary Skanderbeg said the candidate total is the largest since at least 1995.
“Participation is increasing,” she said, noting the Green Party of Manitoba is fielding more than double the number of candidates that it did four years ago.
In the 2007 election, 196 Manitobans let their names stand for election, including 15 Greens.
