BUDGET WINNERS

It’s good to see the government is going to streamline the process for approving oil and mining activity. They also deserve a thumbs-up for starting to tackle the size and cost of the civil service.

BUDGET LOSERS

Those expecting MPs to lead by example and severely cut back their gold-plated pensions. It’s especially difficult to stomach for the vast majority of Canadians who have no workplace pension plan.

ON BALANCE

The budget is a step in the right direction, but we needed to see a much bigger step. Spending is projected to increase by $20 billion over the Harper government’s term and the promise to balance the budget by 2014-15 is in jeopardy. It appears the “temporary” stimulus is not so “temporary” after all.
