MORE apprenticeship positions will be created in Manitoba under an extended tax-incentive program for employers who hire and provide on-the-job training, Premier Greg Selinger said Tuesday.

“There’s a huge demand for apprenticeships and skilled tradespeople all around Manitoba, particularly in the north,” Selinger said. “We have Manitobans that are looking for jobs and if they can get these opportunities they can get really good-paying jobs.”

The province will increase tax incentives for employers in the program who hire apprentices and provide on-the-job training. Hiring incentive-tax credits for levels one and two apprentices will be increased up to a maximum of $3,000 from the current maximum of $2,000. The credit for levels three, four and five apprentices will be doubled to a maximum of $5,000 from $2,500. The province’s journeyperson hiring incentive will also be doubled to a maximum of $5,000.

Selinger also said a new rural and northern apprenticeship training strategy will help people start their own businesses and a new skill-build program will upgrade and equip high school shop classrooms for apprenticeship training. More online services, such as applications, course registration and payment and additional trades-training courses will be added.

The measures follow up on an election promise the NDP made in last fall’s election.
