Winnipeg city council’s property committee voted Tuesday in favour of using a public-private partnership to finance construction of the new South District police station.

A city report recommends Winnipeg budget $18 million and award Shelter Canadian Properties the contract to build the new police station. It will be located at 2321 Grant Ave. and will replace the District 2 and District 6 stations at 210 Lyle St. and 1350 Pembina Hwy.

The city would lease the land to Shelter, which would sublease the land and building to the city for a 30-year term, with two 10-year options to renew. At the end of the lease, the station would be turned over to the city.

The deal still needs to be approved by executive policy committee and city council.
