SELKIRK — A man died Monday afternoon at the community’s outdoor pool in Selkirk Park.
The 44-year-old Selkirk man had lifted his five-year-old daughter onto his shoulders and the two were swimming in the deep end of the pool just after 1 p.m., said Randy Borsa, chief administrative officer of the City of Selkirk.
One of the lifeguards noticed the little girl calling for help, and two lifeguards swam over to the girl and found her father submerged, Borsa said.
The lifeguards lifted the man to the side of the pool and started medical assistance until paramedics took over.
“It was a scary atmosphere. Everyone was just standing in silence while they did CPR on him,” said witness David Atkins, who arrived on the scene after the man had been pulled out of the water.
“Even after the ambulance pulled away, people stayed around the pool, kind of digesting everything.”
The man was rushed to Selkirk Hospital but did not survive.
His name has not been released.
The Selkirk Park Pool & Splash Pad is located at the north end of Selkirk on the banks of the Red River.
RCMP said an autopsy in the coming days will determine the cause of death.
Witnesses speculated the man might have suffered a heart attack.
“The whole city is so shocked. We don’t want to see anything like this happen to anybody,” said Borsa.
“I guess we would feel more relieved if it was a heart attack than a drowning, but it’s still somebody that has passed away in our pool. It’s tremendously sad.”
