Robin Chestnut, 39

Juggler, entertainer, comedian.

Achievements: “The most coordinated Canadian to never pick up a hockey stick,” Chestnut first learned to juggle at age 10 from his cousin. He has practised or performed every day for 29 years and has become a world-class talent. Once the top Canadian at the World Juggling Championships at Reno, Nev., he is a two-time Canadian Juggling Champion and has performed around the world on the Premiere Cruise Lines, SS Oceanic and SS Atlantic. He can balance a ladder on his chin and juggle. At the same time.

1. FAVOURITE WORKOUT

If I’m rushed for time I use the Sworkit App to do some calisthenics. For $0.99, you can’t beat it, or take the free version. But I’d much prefer a juggling workout… moves with three, four, and five clubs, or four, five, six, or seven beanbags is sure to make you break a sweat! I still like to put in an hour or two of practice a couple of times a week.

2. FAVOURITE WORKOUT SONG

A lot of folks like to distract themselves with music, which I totally get, but oddly, I prefer silence. Part of my mind is there to focus on the move that I’m working on, but there seems to be another part coming up with creative ideas for jokes or new routines, and music gets in the way of both for me.

3. FITNESS TIP:

Make it a daily habit, or a part of who you are, so that if you skip a couple of days you really feel like you’re missing something. I remember asking myself when I started out, ‘what would a professional juggler be doing with his time when not performing?’ And the naive answer at the time was ‘PRACTICE!’ so I practised every day, and it became part of my identity. The new, less-naive answer is ‘get gigs!’

4. WHAT’S IN YOUR FRIDGE?

My wife and I like making smoothies in the morning with our mini blender. My recipe: Coconut milk, raw egg (at your own risk), banana, Greek plain yogurt, either peanut butter, or strawberries, (but not both), a sprinkle of chia seeds, hemp powder, and crushed flax seed. Alternately, it’s eggs with spinach salad and a piece of fruit.

5. WHAT’S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?

Skor flavoured ice-cream swirly thing, but that’s pretty rare, but always Skor, it never disappoints.
