Winnipeg marks Nov. 11

It’s time to honour our veterans.

There are numerous Remembrance Day services and activities in Winnipeg Monday.

The largest event will be held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, where Lt.-Gov. Philip Lee will preside over a service attended by representatives of the federal, provincial and municipal governments.

Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the service begins at 10:15.

Highlights will include a Passing of the Torch ceremony by Second World War, Korean, Yugoslavian and Afghanistan veterans, the laying of wreaths by representatives of veteran, military and civilian organizations as well as this year’s Silver Cross Mother and the Last Post ceremony.

A ceremony honouring service members past and present will also be held Monday at the HMCS Chippawa at 1 Navy Way, beginning at 10:15 a.m. Officiating will be Commodore David W. Craig, commander of the Naval Reserve.

Several branches of the Royal Canadian Legion are planning services, including:

— Charleswood, Branch 100, at Oak Park High School, 820 Charleswood Rd., at 10:30 a.m. (seating at 10:15 a.m.);

— Fort Garry, Branch 90, 1125 Pembina Hwy., at 10:45 a.m. (arrive before 10:30);

Also on Remembrance Day:

— A Remembrance Day blood donor clinic will be held between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg.

— The Western Canada Aviation Museum is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. A guided tour celebrating the lives and accomplishments of veterans will begin at 2 p.m. The museum is also showcasing a new display on the Victoria Cross — the highest award for bravery, featuring biographies, photos and artwork of such heroes as Billy Bishop and Andrew Mynarski.
