The Winnipeg Free Press was awarded silver medals in three categories at the 2013 COPA (Canadian Online Publishing Awards) Best of Canada Awards celebration Wednesday night in Toronto.
In the best news coverage category, the Free Press received silver for stories by Randy Turner, Carolin Vesely and Bartley Kives.
The Free Press also earned silver in the best multimedia feature category for the Walk of Life feature by Melissa Tait and Phil Hossack. It was the story of a surgical team from Winnipeg in Latin America taking part in Operation Walk, a program that helps people in developing nations walk again by performing knee-replacement surgeries.
The Free Press was also recognized with silver in the best companion website category.
Free Press education reporter Nick Martin was nominated in the best blog category.
“I am delighted with the three silvers that recognize the outstanding journalism our newsroom serves up for our online audience,” said Free Press editor Paul Samyn. “Winning three silvers from the four nominations we received is proof that what the Free Press is doing digitally is among the best in Canada.”
