Murder charge laid

A man who has cognitive and substance abuse problems faces a murder charge after the death of an assault victim.

Patrick Jeremy Hill, 25, is accused of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Stacy Ralph Barkman, 39, police said Tuesday.

Barkman was assaulted Nov. 21 during a party in a suite in the 100 block of Mayfair Avenue, police said.

He didn’t know his attacker, who fled before officers arrived.

Barkman was rushed to hospital in critical condition, police said, adding he died late Saturday or early Sunday.

Hill was arrested in connection with the attack and initially charged with aggravated assault. Hill’s charges were upgraded Monday.

Barkman’s death marks the 24th homicide in Winnipeg this year.

RRC head to pay expense

Red River College president Stephanie Forsyth voluntarily paid back the costs of hosting a reception at her home — even though a college investigation concluded the expense was legitimate.

Colin Craig, prairie director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said Tuesday he had uncovered a reception at Forsyth’s home for which she claimed expenses. The guests included people from another unidentified post-secondary institution with whom Forsyth wished to network, said Craig.

Neither Craig nor RRC has said which other school guests came from, or how much money was involved.

The CTF has criticized Forsyth for her expenses, including golf shoes and her driver’s licence.

Steroid sales alleged

A former championship bodybuilder is accused of heading up a criminal network that brought steroids into Winnipeg.

Officials with the Canada Border Services Agency released brief details Tuesday of a rare investigation into the flow of anabolic steroids and their derivatives.

Jason Mark Eggleston, 37, faces five charges under the Criminal Code, the Customs Act and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

None of the allegations has been proven and he is presumed innocent. Eggleston will make his first appearance in Winnipeg Jan. 13.
