It was a moment to be savoured. "I turned to my outfitter and he was beaming," said Kent Michie. "Phil told me that this buck was the largest he has ever seen shot with a bow in 24 years of outfitting. That's when I realized just how special this trophy truly was."

Hey there, time traveller!

It was a moment to be savoured. “I turned to my outfitter and he was beaming,” said Kent Michie. “Phil told me that this buck was the largest he has ever seen shot with a bow in 24 years of outfitting. That’s when I realized just how special this trophy truly was.”

After an official score by Safari Club International, Michie’s fallow deer surpassed an animal harvested in 1999 with a score of 226 6/8 SCI. Michie’s deer bettered that with a final score of 230 0/8 SCI.

Michie, a professional guide, taxidermist, Rapid City native and television show host, was guided by Phil Wilson of NZ Hunts, based out of Christchurch on the South Island of New Zealand when he took his fallow deer last spring.

Kent Michie is the new world record holder for fallow deer taken with a bow.

“I am really not sure what to think about holding a world record,” Michie said. “I was just the fortunate person to be in the right spot at the right time with the right outfitter and made a good shot. The fallow buck is the one who grew those impressive antlers and he should get the credit.”

Michie shot the buck using a Mathews DXT bow and arrows tipped with a cut on contact 100 gram Schmeisser broad head.

“The moment the buck saw us and realized that we were not part of the landscape, he turned completely broadside. At the instant Phil said ‘sixty yards,’ I was already at full draw,” Michie said.

The hunt was part of the production agenda for Michie’s show, Trigger Effect (catch it on WildTV or at http://www.thehuntingchannelonline.com/shows/id/97). About three years ago, Michie and a couple of friends from B.C. started tossing around the idea of producing a reality hunting and fishing show.

“It was a big commitment, as none of us had ever done this before and there were major startup costs we would have to incur. Finally we decided that we would gamble on ourselves as we all agreed we didn’t want to look back in 10 years and say, I wished we would have at least tried,” Michie said.

Trigger Effect is now producing shows for Season 2, including the New Zealand fallow deer, moose in B.C., antelope in Wyoming, predator hunts and wild boar.

After nearly 30 years as a professional guide, Michie couldn’t be happier with the path his career has taken recently.

“Now I get to relive those years in my memories while working in my taxidermy shop and also I look forward to making many more new ones with the TV show Trigger Effect and share those with everyone else,” he said.
