IF Premier Greg Selinger loses the NDP leadership Sunday, he won’t lose his job right away.

There is a process he must follow to move out of the premier’s office.

Selinger and the premier-designate, either Steve Ashton or Theresa Oswald, would need to meet as early as Monday to decide on a date of transition.

Selinger would also need to submit his resignation to Lt.-Gov. Philip Lee, effective the date of transition. In submitting his resignation to Lee, Selinger might recommend the new leader be called upon to form a new government.

Selinger would remain on the job up to the moment the new premier and the new cabinet are sworn in by Lee. The existing cabinet is dissolved when the premier steps down.

The premier-designate would also meet with each member of the NDP caucus to build a new cabinet. A new cabinet would involve the reappointment of some MLAs who served through the leadership crisis, and likely the appointment of some of the five cabinet ministers who resigned. Some MLAs who were made ministers in the most recent Selinger cabinet would likely not be reappointed.

The new premier is also free to decide on the size and makeup of cabinet. This involves ensuring a balance between experienced and new ministers, gender and regional representation.

And loyalty.
