The longtime reader wanted to talk about the price increase to his Free Press.

So we chatted about the costs of running a big-city newsroom, the economic challenges facing the media and lessons learned from American newspapers that ended in bankruptcy.

But then he hit me with a question that stopped me dead in my tracks: “So what you are saying to me is you expect loyal subscribers to pay more in order to subsidize those who only want to read you for free online?”
