The Winnipeg Jets have made qualifying offers to four players who are restricted free agents as of Wednesday.

The Jets made appropriate offers to forwards John Albert and Ivan Telegin and defencemen Paul Postma and Julian Melchiori. The deadline for those offers was 4 p.m. CST today.

It allows the Jets to retain the players’ rights and have matching power should a free-agent offer sheet come along.

By not offering deals to goalie Jussi Olkinuora, defenceman Keaton Ellerby and forward Patrick Holland, those three become unrestricted free agents as of Wednesday.

Holland has already signed a deal in Finland for next season.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Jets have nine unrestricted free agents who will hit the open market.

Those include forwards Michael Frolik, Drew Stafford, Jim Slater, Matt Halischuk, Lee Stempniak ,Jiri Tlusty, Eric O’Dell and Patrice Cormier and defenceman Adam Pardy.

Forward T.J. Galiardi will also be a UFA but has already signed to play in Europe.

The Jets are the only team that can negotiate with — and sign — any of their UFAs before Wednesday’s market opens, but once Wednesday at 11 a.m. CST rolls around, all teams are eligible to deal.

Free agents were allowed exploratory talks with other teams as of last Thursday but no deals can be made until July 1.

Wednesday also marks another important date for players who may become free agents in the summer of 2016.

Under most circumstances, the NHL allows for contract extensions to be negotiated up to one year in advance of the expiry of a player’s contract.

That puts Jets captain Andrew Ladd, defenceman Dustin Byfuglien — both potential UFAs at the end of next season — into contract-negotiating windows as of Wednesday.

It also does the same for potential restricted free agents Jacob Trouba, Mark Scheifele and Adam Lowry, all of whom will be in the final year of their entry-level deals in 2015-16.
