Internet pharmacy pioneer Andrew Strempler is a free man as of today.
Strempler, 41, was granted supervised release after serving two-thirds of his sentence, the norm for most offenders. Strempler served two-thirds of a four-year sentence, or about two-and-a-half years.
He was sentenced for conspiracy to commit mail fraud, and importing/selling foreign and fake drugs in the United States. He was also fined $125,000 US.
Strempler’s company was an internet, mail, and telephone order pharmacy that marketed and sold prescription drugs to residents of the U.S.
The court determined from Nov. 2005 to June, 2006, Strempler purchased drugs from foreign countries without complying to safeguards of regulatory authorities. In June, 2006, two large shipments were seized at Miami International Airport and found to contain counterfeit drugs.
Strempler told court his business was expanding at a quick rate and he responded by making some errors, including not properly ensuring the authenticity of his bulk drug purchases.
Strempler is widely credited with launching the Internet pharmacy industry in 2001 when he sold a pack of Nicorette gum on eBay, from his then Minnedosa pharmacy.
He is also known as one of the more flamboyant of Internet pharmacists, who tended to make tremendous returns.
He liked jewelry, from diamond-studded rings to Rolex watches. He had a car park full of luxurious cars, including a yellow Lamborghini, two Dodge Vipers, a Jaguar, a red-and-white Pontiac GTO, and a Bentley previously owned by Jennifer Lopez. He bought Leonard Asper’s 6,500-square-foot home on Wellington Crescent for $2 million.
Most of his prison time was spent in a privately-owned prison in the state of Georgia. He was transferred to a minimum-security prison in Manitoba last July.
Strempler is subject to the usual conditions such as remaining in Canada
His supervised release comes with special conditions, including not owning or operating a business until Jan. 2, 2016, and providing unspecified financial documents to his parole supervisor.
