THE gun stolen from a police vehicle and linked to a shooting that wounded a 16-year-old Winnipeg girl belonged to a Manitoba RCMP sergeant, court documents show.

Ammunition, pepper spray and bicycles were also stolen from the marked police vehicle, which was parked outside the off-duty sergeant’s home in southeast Winnipeg on the night of Oct. 24, the documents reveal.

Police believe the stolen weapon was used later that night in a Windsor Park shooting. Calli Vanderaa was sitting in a parked car with friends around 12:30 a.m. Saturday when a man walked up and fired the gun through the window, striking her in the chest. The bullet missed her heart but punctured her lung and damaged her spleen and colon.

The Winnipeg Police Service said Calli was an innocent victim and charged two men, Matthew Wilfred McKay, 22, and Matthew Andrew Miles, 25. Investigators allege the two suspects broke into the RCMP officer’s car Friday night, stole the gun and other equipment and then fired it in the convenience store parking lot a few hours later after getting into an argument with a group of youths. McKay is charged with two counts of attempted murder, theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000 and several weapons charges. Miles is charged with two counts of theft under $5,000 and numerous weapons charges.

The gun was pointed at five other people, court documents allege, and Calli’s best friend is named as a second victim of attempted murder.

The RCMP sergeant reported his gun and other items stolen at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The RCMP have not commented on the case or on their policy for weapons storage as the Winnipeg Police Service continues to investigate.

Investigators interviewed Calli Thursday as she recovers in hospital.

Her dad, Corey Vanderaa, said he’s still waiting for an explanation from RCMP as to why the gun was left inside the unattended vehicle.
