Sunday slam

Catch an afternoon of high-speed elbows, clotheslines and hip checks at Riot on the Red. The Winnipeg Roller Derby League’s A-level tourney has bouts starting at 9 a.m. today, with the last round at 3 p.m., at the Fort Garry Curling Club. Don’t forget… it’s Chinatown

Today is the last day to experience the eighth annual Winnipeg Chinatown Street Festival, on King Street between James and Alexander avenues. It’s on from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and features cultural music, dancing and demonstrations, and a merchant market. New this year: a kids zone that includes a petting zoo.

Listen to live music

On Tuesday, the Manitoba Conservatory of Music & Arts is holding an open house for the musically curious for all ages and stages, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bryce Hall at the University of Winnipeg. Enjoy live music performances or make your own tunes, visit the instrument petting zoo, get a consultation or take a guided tour of the school. Go to mcma.ca for more info.

Groovy gardens

Spend Wednesday — the last day of August — at a garden party at Assiniboine Park. Imagine is a 1960s-themed soiree in support of Canada’s Diversity Gardens, the final major phase of the Assiniboine Park rejuvenation. Dress in casual summer wear, or let your inspiration dress you in ‘60s fashion as you regale in the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden. Go to assiniboinepark.ca for more information and to view the silent auction prizes and experiences.

Burger binge

Spend your week in a fog of meats and buns. From this Thursday to Wednesday, it’s Burger Week in Winnipeg, where restaurants compete to make the most delicious, imaginative burger. Try as many as possible, and vote on your favourite. For a list of participating restaurants and their feature burgers, go to winnipeg.leburgerweek.com.

Go fish

Throw a line in and see what’s biting along the banks of the Assiniboine River this Saturday. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Fall Fishing Derby is at the canopy at the Forks. Catch a few fish and win a few prizes — not a bad little Saturday. Registration is free, but donations are accepted on behalf of Marymound School and the Never Alone Foundation. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Go to theforks.com for more info.

Get in formation

Make way for the geese. Join Oak Hammock Marsh as it prepares for the arrival of the geese. On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., take a guided canoe adventure or a birding walk through the marsh, or slap some waders on and get in the water. Games, crafts and face-painting also await. Go to oakhammockmarsh.ca for details.
