Hannah Taylor, a 21-year-old Winnipegger, will be one of six 2017 recipients of the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award in September in recognition of her work to combat homelessness and empower youth.

“I’m so incredibly honoured,” Taylor said. “I can hardly speak. I’m getting teary right now thinking about it. He (Ali) is an incredible inspiration and a hero, and to be mentioned with his name and be honoured by his centre, it’s really incredible.”

Taylor founded The Ladybug Foundation, a registered charity, at the age of eight. The charity has since raised more than $3 million dollars to help provide food, shelter and safety to the homeless across Canada.

She is also the founder of another charity, The Ladybug Foundation Education Program, which seeks to empower youth to make positive changes in the world.

The program is in 11,000 classrooms in Canada, and has spread to the United States, France and Singapore.

Taylor is a full-time volunteer and full-time student at McGill University, where she studies political science. She hopes to go to law school to become a human rights attorney.

“I remember this one quote of his (Ali) that has been really dear to me forever,” Taylor said.

“’Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.’ That could not be more profound or profoundly true. He was an incredible example of acting on the responsibility we have to one another.”

The Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards, founded in 2013, are awarded annually to recognize and celebrate “the greatness of people around the world.”

The awards will be presented on September 23 in Louisville Ky.
