Relaxing. Soothing. Calming. Welcoming.

These descriptions don’t often jump to mind when you envision a typical shopping experience.

Yet they accurately describe the enveloping ambiance you’ll feel the moment you step through the doors of St. Mary’s Nursery and Garden Centre.

“Over the years, St. Mary’s Nursery and Garden Centre has transitioned into being a homey and cozy shopping experience,” says co-owner Carla Hrycyna.

“The environment is very warm, welcoming and relaxing. It has an atmosphere that keeps you entertained in a soothing way.”

When people visit the local business for the first time, Hrycyna has noticed them pause in silent wonderment.

“As soon as you open the door, it’s a very different type of feel. It’s almost like you’re visiting a relative or coming home. You’re taking time for yourself,” she says.

“It has a little boutique feel that carries through from one department to another department. It’s very sensory in a way that is visual, tactile, aromatic.”

From season to season, the boutiques change and transition to reflect the time of year.

“One unique thing about us is that we’re open year-round. Some garden centres have a tendency to close down because they’re not in production. We’re still a production company and we do our own growing,” Hrycyna says.

“During the wintertime, you’re seeing just a small footprint of the buildings, but as the seasons progress, you’re able to delve deeper into the core of the garden centre.”

While you wander through the garden centre, the bustling business offers many diverse areas designed to dazzle, such as the quaint new fashion department nestled in a niche of the store.

“We are a very unique gift shop and a gourmet shop,” Hrycyna says. “We have some great gourmet food items that are perfect for instant entertaining. They’re very hostess-orientated and barbecue-orientated.”

St. Mary’s Nursery and Garden Centre offers an ideal destination for everything from some solo shopping to a girls’ afternoon out. At the same time, the environment is well suited for visits from the entire family.

“We’re very family-influenced here since it is a combination of two families that have developed the concept of this kind of shopping atmosphere. It is family-owned and family-operated — and our staff have become part of the family too,” Hrycyna says.

“We also have our cats and birds and fish, so there’s truly a place for all ages. Within the tropical house, kids can visually experience all different aspects of a garden. You’ve got wildlife, you’ve got birds and you’ve got cats coming through. The water garden with the koi ponds completes whole setting. It’s almost like you’re walking into this little mystery garden brimming with sensory sensations.”

For folks who are more familiar with shopping at box stores, they will be astonished at the alternative experience offered by St. Mary’s Nursery and Garden Centre.

“It’s not a place where you’re going to rush in and out. If you’ve never been here before, you’re more likely to find yourself sipping a flavoured coffee while wandering through our boutiques,” Hrycyna says.

“We’re a quaint shopping destination, yet we’re very close and easy to get to. We have a lot of eye candy and our product lines are very giftable. We carry a broad spectrum from home décor to fashion to garden-oriented accents.”

The warm and welcoming atmosphere is a real breath of fresh air — both figuratively and literally.

“People always say that their shoulders relax when they walk through the doors because there’s harmony in the soul from growing plants and treating plants. Yet at Christmastime, people are filled with excitement and anticipation at all we have to offer,” Hrycyna says.

“Throughout every season and every department, service is one of our main focuses. It’s almost like you have this one-on-one experience with some of our staff that are able to help you. While we’re bustling about to help our customers, they can sit down and enjoy that sense of relaxation when they’re within our building. We like to keep our customers happy.”
