Consultant Ajay Chopra says he will run in the October civic election but hasn’t decided if he’ll go after the top job or try for a councillor seat.
Chopra, a resident of Southdale, said he’s “99 per cent certain” he’ll either challenge Brian Bowman for the mayor’s chair or opt to run as a ward councillor.
In a statement issued Thursday afternoon, Chopra repeatedly attacked Bowman’s record, stating that city hall has become increasingly dysfunctional under Bowman.
“Our mayor has wasted time, energy and money on pet projects like studying opening up Portage and Main. What is his legacy? Most Winnipeggers would be hard pressed to answer,” Chopra said.
Chopra was part of the consulting team advising Duffy’s and Unicity taxi owners in their opposition to the city’s ride-hailing bylaw.
During a tense meeting at an October executive policy committee meeting, Bowman accused Chopra of threatening him at an Indian community Diwali celebration. Chopra admitted speaking to Bowman at the event but denied threatening him.
Candidates for mayor can officially register their campaigns May 1, after which they can legally raise campaign funds and hold campaign events.
Councillor candidates can register on June 30.
Formal nominations for both can only occur between Sept. 12 and Sept. 18.
