Hey there, time traveller!

For the first time in nearly 20 years, the Manitoba government has released provincial Grade 12 test results, broken down by school division.

The last time such a data release occurred was in 1999 when the PCs were last in power.

Kelvin Goertzen, education minister, said he’s pushing for greater transparency and accountability by publicizing the test results.

“There might be different reasons in different areas why there are challenges, and they’re probably very legitimate reasons, and we can work through that,” he said.

“But, if you don’t at least reveal those challenges, how do you ever really make advancements forward?” Goertzen added.

The minister noted many other provinces release such statistics, breaking down the test results by school. That’s a step Goertzen will consider after the K-12 education review — scheduled for 2019 — is completed.

NDP critic Matt Wiebe disagreed with the government’s decision to publicize the test results widely.

“Test results help school divisions, boards and teachers improve the education system. They are not meant to divide school divisions and ultimately, Manitoba families,” Wiebe said in a statement.

“The day after Manitobans elected a new wave of school trustees, the Pallister government has set the stage for education cuts by threatening and intimidating school divisions.”

Goertzen said he isn’t releasing the data for the purpose of comparing divisions, but to try to push all parties to achieve better results.

The test results are available at edu.gov.mb.ca.
