Manitoba’s newest Crown corporation has its first chief executive officer.
The province announced Thursday the manager of Manitoba Hydro’s Power Smart program, Colleen Kuruluk, will head up First Efficiency Manitoba, starting Jan. 2.
The Crown corporation is a commitment Premier Brian Pallister made to boost energy savings in the province.
In Thursday’s announcement, Crown Services Minister Colleen Mayer described First Efficiency as a leader in green energy and part of the Pallister government commitment’s to promote conservation.
The new Crown corporation was announced in 2017, and the province appointed its first board in spring 2018. The new CEO moves it a step closer to being operational.
“Under the new leadership of Ms. Kuruluk, Efficiency Manitoba is well-suited to move forward in its role in reducing energy costs for Manitobans and in delivering improved energy savings programs,” Mayer said in the announcement.
An Asper School of Business graduate from the University of Manitoba, Kuruluk had led Hydro’s Power Smart program since 2007. She is also a member of the standing committee on energy efficiency, which makes recommendations to the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes.
The provincial Crown corporation’s mandate is to reduce electricity consumption by 1.5 per cent and natural gas consumption by 0.75 per cent.
