Hey there, time traveller!

On the first full day of the federal election campaign, the Conservative candidate in Winnipeg North was forced to step down over social media posts the party deemed “discriminatory.”

In a news release issued by the Tories Thursday, the party said the internet messages had been withheld from them during the candidate-vetting process because Cameron Ogilvie had temporarily deleted one of his two Facebook accounts.

In Facebook posts unearthed by PressProgress, a left-wing media arm of the Broadbent Institute, Ogilvie shared several posts that expressed ethnocentric, Islamophobic sentiment.

In one post from May 2018 on the Facebook account, which has been deleted, Ogilvie shared a photo originally posted by the United Conservative Movement of Canada that read: “One nation under God not Allah. Canada is not a Muslim nation. Canada is not an Islamic nation. Canada is a Christian nation.”

One post shared on Ogilvie’s account in December 2018 referred to being transgender as “a psychological disorder.” A month later, the account “liked” comments deriding Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s “support for anal sex” and Pride parades. Two posts disputed the existence of climate change.

Ogilvie “was asked immediately to step down as soon as (the Conservative party) became aware of the posts,” the Tory release said.

Another Facebook account, which was still active as of Thursday, shows Ogilvie wearing a suit and tie and includes a Conservative party slogan. It links to an official party profile — that was deleted Thursday — which noted: “Cameron has a love for people of all ethnic backgrounds, loves learning about other cultures and is willing to give of his time freely to help others in anyway he can.”

Reached by the Free Press at his Tyndall Park home, Ogilvie declined to comment on the matter.

The party said a new candidate will be named for Winnipeg North.

Canadians go to the polls Oct. 21.
