One good deed deserves another. Following a $100,000 donation of personal protective equipment to United Way Winnipeg in December, Bianca Amor’s Liquidation Supercentre donated another $300,000 worth of PPE last week to seven United Way organizations across Western Canada. These donations were a welcome sight in Vancouver, Kamloops, Lethbridge, Red Deer, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg.

Maya Graves-Bacchus, grant administrator for the United Way of the Lower Mainland, said they were thrilled to receive the donation of face masks, face shields, disposable aprons and hand sanitizer.

“It was an incredible act of generosity that couldn’t have come at a better time,” she said.

“PPE is so important to the ongoing health of our community and should not be a barrier for anyone who needs it.”

“The PPE and sanitizer will be distributed to food hubs, schools, First Nations communities, seniors’ centres, community programming that supports mental health and well-being, and agencies who will distribute to individuals who have barriers in accessing PPE.”

Personal protective equipment remains in high demand across Vancouver and surrounding areas.

“We recently did an assessment of need for PPE across our community through our community partners in the Lower Mainland, and there was an overwhelming response that the need is still very high,” Graves-Bacchus said.

“PPE is so important to the ongoing health of our community and should not be a barrier for anyone who needs it. Many of our partners reported low to no stock, so this donation will go a long way to meeting this need.”

At the same time, personal protective equipment enables crucial supports to operate during the pandemic.

“Having this donation is huge given the demonstrated need. If services or institutions with limited resources are able to secure PPE, they can continue their essential work in community — work that is in increasingly high demand due to COVID-19,” Graves-Bacchus said.

“United Way and our partner agencies are very grateful to Bianca Amor for their generous donation.”

Similarly, Suzi Medhurst of United Way of the Alberta Capital Region said many partners have reported a continued or increased need for PPE, which will be ongoing for the foreseeable future.

“We are so grateful for this incredible act of generosity by Bianca Amor. This donation will allow so many organizations to continue to safely provide services to those in need as well as provide protection to their clients, volunteers and staff,” she said.

“The PPE and hand sanitizer will be distributed to our many partners throughout the region, many of whom are working with the most vulnerable people in our community, to allow them to continue to provide essential support and services.”

As a result, individuals can access these services despite the barriers caused by the pandemic.

“This donation means that our front-line agencies are able to have the resources they need to support their staff and clients who are most at risk of being impacted by the pandemic,” Medhurst said.

“At United Way, we are committed to continuing to rally the community together so that we can keep our community safe and strong.”

As founder of the company — which has grown to 11 locations across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba — Bianca Amor aims to do all she can to prevent virus transmission.

“Our primary goal is to get the COVID-19 cases under control as quickly as possible so business and life can get back to normal,” she said.

“It would be wonderful to reduce the risk of individuals catching COVID-19, and we are happy to help.”
