When it comes to crime across the province, it’s as if the pandemic is over.

The RCMP released its monthly police-reported crime statistics on Thursday for the month of June and it says compared to the same month in 2020, all offences except for break-and-enters have increased.

The RCMP said drug enforcement increased in all districts; the largest jump was in the western district, at 129 per cent.

“The overall increases are more reflective of pre-pandemic numbers of occurrences,” the report said.

“Mental health and well-being checks increased significantly in all three districts, which has been the trend since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The RCMP’s districts divide the province into the east, west and north districts.

Overall, the RCMP stats show calls for service across the province went up by four per cent last month compared with June 2020. That’s because while calls for service went down by 12 per cent in the west district, and six per cent in the east, it increased by 28 per cent in the north.

Drug enforcement in the east district went up by 56 per cent, mostly because of increases in trafficking and possession, while the north district had an increase of 50 per cent.

The west’s jump in drug enforcement was due in large part to a 220 per cent increase in trafficking and 73 per cent more possession offences.

Break-and-enters fell in all three districts between 21 to 25 per cent.
