The Esplanade Riel restaurant space could be converted into offices, after three different restaurants couldn’t make a lasting profit at the site.

A new report proposes to lease the 50 Provencher Blvd. site to Biomedical Commercialization Canada (operating as Manitoba Technology Accelerator), pending the approval of council’s property and development committee.

While the city’s chief administrative officer could approve the lease, the CAO opted to refer the matter for a committee vote, since it would result in a new use for the “high-profile location,” the report says.

Past restaurant owners said high operating costs and a limited sales season hindered their businesses.

The new plan would create office space and create a Technology Commercialization Hall of Fame.

The company would pay $20,000 in rent annually throughout a five-year lease, if the proposal is approved.
