Short-term drinking water advisories lifted

Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller has announced that two short-term drinking water advisories at two Manitoba First Nations have been lifted.

Advisories at Pauingassi and Little Grand Rapids First Nations went into effect in July when forest fires forced evacuations.

Wildfires scorched approximately 800,000 hectares of land east of Lake Winnipeg.

Manitoba Hydro reported the fires had damaged 91 hydro poles and 35 structures servicing the two communities.

More than 1,500 people from the two northern communities were able to return home earlier this month.

Fleury foursome repeats as Masters champion

Tracy Fleury’s team slipped past Jennifer Jones 9-7 in an all-Manitoba final of the Masters women’s curling event in Oakville, Ont., Sunday afternoon.

Fleury’s East St. Paul crew, with third Selena Njegovan, second Liz Fyfe and lead Kristin MacCuish, earned $35,000 for the win.

After giving up a steal in the eighth end, Fleury executed a perfect double-takeout to score a pair in the extra end to nail down the victory. They also won the Grand Slam of Curling tour event in 2019.

The Masters was cancelled last year, owing to the pandemic.

Jones and her Winnipeg team of third Kaitlyn Lawes, second Jocelyn Peterman and lead Dawn McEwen settled for $20,000.

Later today, Scotland’s Bruce Mouat meets Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., in the men’s final.

Firefighter hurt in Main Street blaze

A firefighter was transported to hospital in stable condition after being injured Sunday as crews battled a large fire in a multi-unit commercial building in the 800 block of Main Street.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a report of the fire at 7:43 a.m.

Occupants of neighbouring units in the building were evacuated. The building is considered a total loss, and the remaining structure was expected to be demolished because of the risk of further collapse, the City of Winnipeg said in a news release.

The Holy Ascension Greek Orthodox Church on Euclid Avenue sustained smoke and water damage.

Crews were expected to remain on scene into late Sunday afternoon. Main Street was closed in both directions between Jarvis and Selkirk avenues. The area was reopened to southbound traffic before 1 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service said.

Damage estimates were not available Sunday. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Man killed in hit and run near The Pas

A 31-year-old man from The Pas was found dead early Sunday morning in what police say was a hit and run incident 10 kilometres north of the community.

Around 2 a.m., The Pas RCMP responded to a report of a deceased man on the shoulder of Highway 10.

It is believed the man was walking on the highway when he was struck by a large, southbound vehicle that did not stop at the scene.

Police ask anyone with information to contact The Pas RCMP at 204-627-6200 and advise anyone travelling on the highway around the time of the collision to check their vehicle or trailer for signs of damage.
