THE Omicron subvariant BA.2 appears to have become the dominant strain of COVID-19 in Manitoba based on recent genome sequencing of positive tests.
The province sequences about 200 positive coronavirus tests a week, or about 10 to 15 per cent of the overall total, a spokesperson said.
In the latest run, 60 per cent came back as BA.2 infections. In the latest wave, the original Omicron variant, known as BA.1, became Manitoba’s dominant strain of COVID, replacing Delta.
The provincial spokesperson said a booster dose of a vaccine will increase protection against severe disease, but “the ability of the vaccine to prevent BA.2 infection is lower than with previous variants.”
