A teacher in Ste. Anne is facing charges of sexual assault and sexual interference involving a minor.

Police said Jacques Normandeau is no longer a teacher at École Pointe-des-Chênes in Ste. Anne, about 40 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg.

Normandeau, who had worked in Winnipeg, was arrested April 4 in connection with incidents which allegedly happened in recent months.

He was released on a number of conditions, confirmed Ste. Anne police Chief Marc Robichaud.

Normandeau is scheduled to appear in court in Steinbach on June 16.

Pointe-des-Chênes, a K-12 school, is run by Division scolaire franco-manitobaine.

A spokeswoman for the French school division declined to comment.

In a letter sent to the school community Tuesday, the division acknowledged the arrest of a teacher at École Pointe-des-Chênes.

The division has sent a student services team to the school to support students and staff who may be affected, wrote Supt. Alain Laberge.

“Appropriate” measures are in place to ensure a “healthy and safe learning environment” for children, said the letter, which was addressed to students, parents and legal guardians.

Anyone with information about the situation should report it to Ste. Anne police, wrote Laberge.

Normandeau was a teacher in Pembina Trails School Division from 2005 to 2016, a spokesman for the division in southwest Winnipeg confirmed.

“As his legal case is ongoing, we will not have any further comment,” the spokesman wrote in an email.
