Fish foiled by rain in series opener with Sioux Falls

The scoreboard read 0-0, but Mother Nature was victorious in Tuesday evening’s contest between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Sioux Falls Canaries at Shaw Park.

The game was canceled after a brief rain delay and a doubleheader is scheduled for Wednesday at 5:35 p.m. Both contests are set for seven innings.

The Goldeyes’ hopes of getting back in the win column following a 9-7 loss against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Sunday afternoon will have to wait.

Winnipeg rounds out its series with Sioux Falls Thursday at 11 a.m. before heading out on a 10-game road trip.

Jets interview Trotz for head coaching job

The Winnipeg Jets were scheduled to meet with Barry Trotz today to discuss the NHL team’s head coaching vacancy.

An initial report from Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada about the interview was confirmed this afternoon by a Free Press source.

Trotz, 59, a Manitoba product, was fired by the New York Islanders just over a week ago.

He has coached 1,812 NHL games over 23 seasons with the Islanders, the Washington Capitals and the Nashville Predators — second-most in league history behind only Scotty Bowman. He’s also third in wins (914) behind only Bowman and Joel Quenneville.

New permanent public washroom opens downtown

A new permanent public washroom will open at 715 Main St. in late May to provide vulnerable Winnipeggers in the downtown area “a place to go.”

The washroom, named Amoowigamig, will open for public use on May 30, with operating hours daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre will staff the facility during those hours. The structure contains an office that will provide a drinking water fountain, a foot-washing station, phone access, internet and can help folks connect with support services.

The project’s $874,289 cost will be covered through a $633,087 Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Community Response Fund for Vulnerable Populations grant, along a $241,202 grant from Circle of Life Thunderbird House, on behalf of the Government of Canada.

CMHR making bathrooms ‘gender inclusive’

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights announced today it is making all its washrooms “gender inclusive.”

The doors to the facilities will list the amenities available in each space, not a “men’s” or “women’s” designation, and will be available for anyone to use.

“This approach will allow people to make choices based on their needs and not force them to comply with a binary system of gender to which they may not subscribe,” Haran Vijayanathan, the CMHR’s director of equity and growth, said in a news release. “This is also an important shift for parents and caregivers, who can now go into any washroom to provide support without worrying they are in the ‘wrong’ space.”
