Fire breaks out in two-storey house on Stella Avenue

A fire broke out in a two-storey house in the 600 block of Stella Avenue at 2:18 a.m. on August 14, 2022. The fire was mainly spread in the rear of the main floor.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service brought the fire under control at 2:35 am. The house was empty at the time and no injuries were reported.

The incident is being investigated. The WFPS did not provide any damage estimates.

Fire in Portage Avenue mall, no injuries reported

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a fire alarm in a single-storey strip mall located in the 3000 block of Portage Avenue at 4:32 a.m. on August 14, 2022.

The first responders, which included WPS officers, located the fire inside an ATM banking machine. The fire was brought under control using an extinguisher.

No injuries were reported. The incident is under investigation.

15-year-old arrested for armed robbery on Portage Avenue

A Winnipeg youth is facing numerous charges related to an attempted armed robbery on Portage Avenue.

At approximately midnight on Aug. 14, Winnipeg Police Service officers responded to reports of a robbery by firearm in the 900 block of Portage Avenue, the WPS said in a Sunday press release.

According to the police report, the suspect approached a group of five men and attempted to rob them with a handgun. The victims fled but later encountered the suspect again.

When he attempted to rob them the second time, the victims subdued the suspect and held him until police arrived.

Officers arrested the 15-year-old male and seized his firearm, identifying it as a Smith and Wesson BB air pistol.

The suspects and victims did not know each other and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crime, police said.

Police seeking information on Osborne Street Bridge assault

The Major Crimes Unit is seeking information about anyone who may have witnessed an assault that took place early Saturday morning.

At approximately 5:30 a.m. Saturday, police responded to the southeast sidewalk of the Osborne Street Bridge for the report of an injured male where they found a 28-year-old male from Winnipeg with injuries to the upper body.

The victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where he remains.

Any area residents with surveillance footage or motorists with dash camera footage are urged to come forward. Further, anyone with knowledge of the incident can contact the Major Crimes Unit at (204) 986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477).

Off-duty Winnipeg Transit operators assaulted on Brandon Avenue

Two off-duty Winnipeg Transit operators were assaulted at the 600 block of Brandon Avenue early Saturday morning. At approximately 5:00 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service found the two victims, 57 and 54 years old, respectively.

The 57-year-old male suffered a minor injury, but did not require medical attention, police said. The 54-year-old male was uninjured. Both were in uniform and off-duty at the time of the incident.

The suspect fled the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
