Waywayseecappo woman dead after Highway 45 collision

A 22-year-old woman from Waywayseecappo First Nation is dead after a collision on Highway 45 south of Riding Mountain National Park Sunday night.

At about 10:45 p.m., Russell RCMP raced to the reported two-vehicle collision at the intersection of the highway with Road 151 W, which is about three kilometres east of Angusville.

The RCMP’s initial investigation indicates a westbound vehicle, driven by a 24-year-old man from Long Plain First Nation, turned left onto Road 151 West when it was struck by an eastbound pickup truck driven by a 54-year-old man from the Rural Municipality of Mossey River.

The Long Plain man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while the woman was pronounced dead on scene. The driver and passenger of the pickup were also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

RCMP allege alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Pedestrian dead after downtown collision Sunday

A woman in her 30s has died after she was struck by a vehicle near Portage Avenue and Vaughan Street on Sunday night.

Winnipeg police were called to the intersection at about 10:15 p.m., where the victim had been hit after she stepped into the road, police said Tuesday.

She was taken to hospital in critical condition, where she later died. The vehicle’s driver remained at the scene and spoke with officers, police said.

Traffic investigators ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call the division at 204-986-7085.

Man shot in Spence Street home

Winnipeg police have arrested three suspects after a man was shot at a home on Spence Street Monday night.

Officers, including tactical police with long guns, raced to the 500 block of Spence Street at about 8:45 p.m. for a reported shooting.

Police found a man suffering “serious” gunshot wounds and gave him medical care before paramedics arrived. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, but has since stabilized.

Officers arrested three suspects in the area, but have not yet said whether they’ve laid any charges. Major crimes investigators are still probing the incident and ask anyone with information to contact the unit at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.

Woman dead in Ethelbert house fire

A woman died after a house fire in a small community north of Dauphin on Monday.

Dauphin RCMP were called to a house fire at a home in Ethelbert at about 4:25 p.m.

After firefighters extinguished the blaze, they entered the home and found the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name and age have not been released.

Dauphin RCMP, along with major crimes and forensics officers and the Office of the Fire Commissioner, are investigating the fire and incident, RCMP said Tuesday.

Hurricanes sign Stastny

The Carolina Hurricanes announced Tuesday that they have signed former Winnipeg Jets forward Paul Stastny to a one-year, $1.5-million contract.

The 36-year-old had 21 goals and 24 assists in 71 games with the Jets last season. The Quebec City product has 800 career points (284 goals, 516 assists) in 1,072 NHL games with Colorado, St. Louis, Winnipeg and Vegas.

Missing senior found

Winnipeg police said a vulnerable 77-year-old man missing since Monday has been safely located.

Jhongan Jhou had last been seen in the West End at around 8 a.m. Monday.
