Atwal to give COVID-19 vaccine update

Manitoba’s deputy chief public health officer will give an update on COVID-19 vaccines Friday.

Dr. Jazz Atwal will speak to the press at the Legislative Building at 12:30 p.m.

The news conference will be livestreamed on the province’s website and on YouTube.

Moose Lake woman killed in rollover

A 26-year-old Moose Lake woman is dead after she was ejected from a vehicle during a rollover.

Moose Lake RCMP said on Friday the woman, who was a passenger in a vehicle and not wearing a seatbelt, was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but died of her injuries.

RCMP said a vehicle was being driven by a 29-year-old Moose Lake man on PR 384 near Crossing Bay about 25 kilometres north of Moose Lake when it lost control, entered a ditch and rolled on Aug. 31 at about 11:10 a.m.

The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, suffered minor injuries.

The collision is under investigation. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a cause.

Man found dead in Home Street suite believed to be victim of homicide

Winnipeg Police Service homicide investigators are searching for information after a 66-year-old man was found dead on Home Street Thursday.

Police were called about a severely injured man found in a suite in a residential building on the 600 block of the West End street just before 8 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found the man dead. Investigators have since identified the victim as Son Minh Nguyen, 66, of Winnipeg, and police believe his death was a homicide. His death marks the 36th slaying in Winnipeg this year.

Three fatal vehicle collisions in 24 hours Thursday

RCMP responded to three separate fatal vehicle collisions in the span of a day Thursday.

A pickup truck travelling north on Road 109 W, one kilometre north of Highway 5, lost control, drove into a ditch and rolled at around 2:50 p.m.

The 60-year-old victim, a man from the rural municipality of Dauphin, was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Seven hours later, a pickup truck travelling eastbound on Highway 1, one kilometre east of the Assiniboine River bridge, entered a ditch and rolled. The victim, a 32-year-old man from Winnipeg, was also not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene.

Less than two hours later, at around 11:15 p.m., a vehicle heading southbound on Highway 52 and Road 32E, two kilometres west of Steinbach, entered an intersection and was hit by a vehicle going west.The driver of the vehicle going south, a 37-year-old woman from Mitchell, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the westbound vehicle was sent to hospital with severe injuries.

Part of Main Street closed

Northbound Main Street between Logan and Higgins avenues was closed Friday afternoon after a man was assaulted in the area.

At about 2:40 p.m., Winnipeg police officers responded to the 600 block of Main after receiving a report of an assault. A man was taken to hospital in unstable condition.

An ambulance could be seen leaving the scene shortly before 3:30 p.m., while multiple police cruisers and uniformed officers were at the scene.

Northbound Main Street remained closed Friday afternoon as the investigation continues.
