Hey there, time traveller!

When Janet Menec learned millions of people around the world don’t have the supplies they need to manage their periods, resulting in many of them missing work or school a few days each month, she decided to take action.
Menec founded the Winnipeg chapter of Days for Girls, an international organization that supplies reusable menstrual health kits worldwide. Since forming the chapter in 2014, Menec and her team of about 80 volunteers have made and distributed more than 4,600 kits. The hand-sewn menstrual pads included are meant to last three years with proper care.
For Menec, getting involved with Days for Girls was a way to combine her background as an adult educator with her passion for textiles.

Janet Menec volunteers with the Winnipeg chapter of Days for Girls, an international organization that provides menstrual pads to women and girls around the world.
“I enjoy volunteering with Days for Girls because it gives me an opportunity to use my passion for sewing and love for fabrics, and it allows me to meet with like-minded individuals who also want to use those skills in a meaningful way,” she says. “When you can find a cause that really speaks to your own personal interests and skills, then it’s a real joy to become involved.”
The Winnipeg chapter was recognized for its efforts recently when it received the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Community Changemakers Award as part of the 39th annual Volunteer Awards.
Presented by Volunteer Manitoba and MLL, this year’s awards recognize more than 20 outstanding volunteers and organizations from across the province.
Volunteer Manitoba announced the recipients at the end of July and will celebrate them during a one-hour broadcast airing on CTV on Oct. 1, starting at 7 p.m.
“We are thrilled beyond description about this wonderful recognition,” Menec says.
Divya Sharma, another winner, says it felt good to receive one of three Lieutenant Governor’s Community Leadership awards.
“I’m very, very grateful,” she says. “To be deemed worthy of this is very special.”
Divya moved to Winnipeg from India with her family in 2014. At 17, she is already a prolific volunteer.
During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, she started a project that put together and distributed care packages for front-line workers across Canada.
She is the co-founder of a network of lawyers and youth interested in legal advocacy called Law and Witness. She’s volunteered on the organizing committee for the Winnipeg Model United Nations Assembly, coached grades 7 and 8 basketball, and served as student council president at Fort Richmond Collegiate during the 2021-22 school year.

Divya also volunteers as a mentor with CanU, an enrichment program for youth she first joined in 2015 as a mentee. Staff from the charitable organization nominated her for the award.
“I had so many mentors in my life through CanU, and Roger Berrington — he is the executive director — is someone who I really look up to,” Divya says. “Being able to (mentor) people whose shoes I was in is just incredible.”
At a time when Volunteer Manitoba is encouraging folks to get back to the volunteer commitments they may have taken a break from when the pandemic started, the Volunteer Awards are important because they highlight the great work people are doing, says Jackie Hunt, executive director at Volunteer Manitoba.
“The whole idea behind the awards is just to remind people about the importance of volunteerism,” she says. “When we recognize a handful of people, we’re really celebrating all volunteers in Manitoba.”
