Bisons looking for first victory of university football season

The Manitoba Bisons are still looking for their first victory of the Canadian university football season.

The Bisons surrendered three touchdowns in the second quarter and eventually fell 34-11 to the Alberta Golden Bears in Edmonton on Friday night.

Manitoba is 0-2 and hosts the UBC Thunderbirds (1-1) this Friday.

Des Catellier and Jackson Tachinski split the quarterbacking duties for the Bisons. Tachinski hit receiver Brendt Adams for a late major.

Abdul-Karim Gassama had his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game for the Herd.

Manitoba lost Nick Thomas and Marcel Arruda-Welch, two key contributors on defence, to injury.

Alberta receiver Kolby Hurlfurd snared three TD passes as the Golden Bears improved to 1-1 on the Canada West conference season.

Police arrest man after reports of stabbing, threats

Winnipeg police have arrested a 24-year-old man after receiving reports of an armed male threatening to stab members of the public Friday evening.

Shortly after 5 p.m., a 41-year-old man was found at the intersection of Broadway and Balmoral Street suffering from an upper-body injury as a result of a stab wound. In the 200 block of Young Street, a 32-year-old female was allegedly threatened by a man while he held a sharp-edged weapon. The female escaped safely. A third victim, a 54-year-old male, was also allegedly approached by the suspect at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Furby Street and unsuccessfully stabbed.

The suspect faces various charges including assault with a weapon, uttering threats and failure to comply with condition of a release order. He remains in custody.

Missing man last seen in Steinbach

Steinbach RCMP are asking for the public’s help in finding a missing man who has not been heard from since Monday.

David McFarland, 48, of Steinbach was last seen at his home on Maplewood Street. Police say McFarland’s cell phone was found at his home.

McFarland is described as 5’9″ with a slim build, bald, and clean-shaven. Police say he has known medical conditions that require care and that it’s possible he is in the Winnipeg area.

Anyone with information is asked to call Steinbach RCMP at 204-326-4452, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, or submit a secure tip online at mantiobacrimestoppers.com.

Valour blanked in the Maritimes

Valour FC dropped a critical match against a favourable opponent on Saturday afternoon.

The Winnipeg club was blanked 1-0 by the seventh-place HFX Wanderers at Wanderers Grounds in Halifax.

Wanderers’ Samuel Salter scored in the 33rd minute to give the hosts the only goal of the match.

The loss drops Valour to 10-7-7 on the season and keeps them at 36 points with four games remaining on the dwindling schedule.

The club currently holds the fourth and final spot in the CPL playoff race.

Valour will play first-place Atlético Ottawa at IG Field next Sunday.

Bombers lead Banjo Bowl at halftime

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers hold a 27-10 lead at halftime over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at IG Field.

The Bombers have been efficient with the ball, boasting 263 yards of total offence at the break.

Quarterback Zach Collaros is a clean 14-15 with 187 yards and three touchdowns through the air. Two receiving majors have been caught by Nic Demski, who now has three touchdowns in the past two games. Rasheed Bailey has the third touchdown grab after a 24-yard catch-and-run as the half was ending.

Third-string QB Dakota Prukop rushed for a touchdown at the start of the second quarter.

Today marks the 18th edition of the Banjo Bowl.

Bombers up big heading after third

The Bombers enter the fourth quarter having maintained the 17-point advantage they took into halftime, leading the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders  37-20.

Riders’ returner Mario Alford stunned the host club right out of the gates of the break, returning the opening kick of the half for a 92-yard touchdown to hush the crowd at IG Field.

The clubs exchanged field goals before Zach Collaros found second-year receiver Brendan O’Leary Orange for his first-career major to end the quarter.

The Bombers are hoping to sweep the Labour Day Classic/Banjo Bowl series.

Bombers rout Riders in Banjo Bowl

The Bombers captured the 18th edition of the Banjo Bowl with a dominant 54-20 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in front of a raucous sold-out crowd at IG Field.

It’s the Bombers’ third-straight victory in the Banjo Bowl and the second-straight year they’ve swept the back-to-back series.

Big Blue never trailed in the game, controlling the contest from the outset. The offence had its way all day, posting 407 yards of total offence — 284 through the air — en route to a seven-touchdown performance.

Quarterback Zach Collaros enjoyed an efficient day, going 21-25 for 273 yards and four passing touchdowns, boasting a perfect 158.3 passer rating. Nic Demski was on the receiving end of two majors, totalling seven grabs for 71 yards on the day.

The defence had four sacks in the contest, two by star pass-rusher Willie Jefferson.

The Bombers will hit the road for a matchup against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sept. 17.
