Charges in fatal collision

A 45-year-old Winnipeg man faces a barrage of charges, including drunk driving causing death, in a fatal collision Monday night.

Officers raced to Grey Street and Munroe Avenue around 11:30 p.m. after the vehicle hit another car and then a hydro pole, police said.

Firefighters had to extricate the occupants of the first vehicle. The driver and a 32-year-old passenger were taken to hospital in unstable condition. A third occupant, a man in his 20s, died in hospital.

The driver of the vehicle that was hit was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police say they found a loaded sawed-off shotgun in the vehicle driven by the 45-year-old accused.

Cainin Cole Xavier has been charged with driving impaired causing death, causing death by criminal negligence, dangerous operation causing death. He’s also been charged with nine weapons offences. He remains in hospital.

Gordon William Kovich, 32, of Winnipeg, who was a passenger, has been charged with 10 weapons offences. He was detained.

Man, 30, killed in Pinawa crash

A Powerview man was killed when his vehicle struck a tree in Pinawa.

The crash happened at the end of Provincial Road 211 between about 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Saturday. The vehicle ended up on the embankment of the Pinawa Channel.

RCMP were not contacted until about 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The 30-year-old driver was declared dead when officers arrived.

RCMP said the initial investigation determined the man, who was the vehicle’s only occupant, was travelling east at a high rate of speed when he struck a tree and was ejected from the vehicle and onto the embankment.
