Wheeler no longer Jets captain

Blake Wheeler will no longer be the captain of the Winnipeg Jets.

Instead, the NHL team will go with a group of assistant-captains rather than one player wearing the “C” on his jersey.

Wheeler, 36, beginning his 15th season in the league, had been captain since 2016.

“It is our goal to expand the leadership base within our hockey team. We have high expectations for our core players and we want to provide them with the opportunity to step into those greater leadership roles as a group,” said Jets head coach Rick Bowness, in a statement this morning.

Bowness and Wheeler will speak to reporters at noon at Bell MTS Iceplex.

Fourth suspect charged in February homicide

A woman has been charged in connection with a slaying at a Winnipeg home in February.

Winnipeg police said on Friday Kayla Josephine Bercier, 23, of The Pas was arrested on Sept. 9, after an incident where she allegedly threatened a family member.

She has been charged with accessory after the fact to murder and uttering threats in connection with the death of Brandon Brust.

Brust, 26, of Scanterbury was reported missing in February. An investigation determined he had been attacked and killed inside a Pritchard Avenue residence, and his remains moved elsewhere, on Feb. 11.  A woman at the scene was allegedly assaulted, and another threatened and forcibly confined, police said.

RCMP found human remains in the Rural Municipality of Woodlands on March 30 and later determined they were Brust.

A man and two other women have been previously charged in connection with events at the Pritchard Avenue home.

Bercier is being held in custody.

RCMP officer assaulted with metal bar

A man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a RCMP officer with a metal bar in Lowe Farm, located approximately 17 kilometres west of Morris, on Wednesday.

Morris RCMP said officers went to the community after reports that a man was walking on a road hitting vehicles with a metal bar while screaming at about 10 a.m.

The first officer there tried to de-escalate the situation, but the suspect allegedly struck the officer with the metal bar. RCMP say the officer was able to back away and use pepper spray, but it had almost no effect.

The suspect was arrested by the officer and bystanders after dropping the bar.

The officer was treated on the scene by paramedics and released.

A 37-year-old man, believed to have been on methamphetamine, has been charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon. He was detained in custody.
