Crews respond to blaze on College Avenue

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services were called to the 300 block of College Avenue Saturday just before 6 a.m. following reports of a fire.

When crews arrive at the vacant, two-storey home, they launched an offensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 6:34 a.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Man killed in assault on Arlington

A 29-year-old man is dead after he was attacked early Saturday morning on Arlington Street.

Winnipeg police were called to a vendor in the 1100 block of Arlington around 1:20 a.m. after receiving a report of an assault, police said in a news release Saturday.

Officers found the man seriously injured and began emergency medical care. The victim was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have identified the victim as Enrique George Courchene of Winnipeg.

The homicide unit is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Boy, 14, facing charges after bear spray discharged near Millennium Library

Winnipeg police have charged 14-year-old boy after he allegedly discharged a can of bear spray at three people sitting on a bench.

Police say the incident took place Friday around 10 p.m. near the Millennium Library.

The boy was taken into custody and officers seized the bear spray and a knife.

He is facing weapons charges and failure to comply with conditions of an undertaking.

Winnipeg man facing firearm charges following investigation

Winnipeg police have charged a 25-year-old man from Winnipeg after a month-long investigation.

Police say it began investigating a man in August who was suspected to be in illicit possession of a handgun. On Aug. 22, the man was taken into custody and a residence in the 200 block of Centennial Street was searched.

The search found a loaded handgun and approximately $10,000.

The man is facing various firearm charges. He was released on an appearance notice.

Mayoral candidate Gillingham pledges to upgrade Transit Plus booking system

Mayoral candidate Scott Gillingham announced his intentions to improve mobility in Winnipeg for people with disabilities, in a release Saturday.

Gillingham’s plan includes:

  • Activating an online booking system for Transit Plus;
  • Waiving permit fees until 2024 for accessibility improvements to buildings;
  • Improving sidewalk snow clearing through Neighbourhood Action Teams

The municipal election takes place Oct. 26.

Longtime politician Bill Blaikie dies at 71

Bill Blaikie, former Member of Parliament and MLA, has died.

Blaikie’s son, Daniel (MP for Elmwood-Transcona), announced his passing on social media Saturday.

Earlier this week Blaikie announced he was transitioning to palliative care.
