Man shot by police in Point Douglas

A man was shot by Winnipeg police at a home in the Point Douglas neighbourhood this morning.

The Winnipeg Police Service said the incident happened at about 8:15 a.m.

An adult male was transported to hospital in unstable condition and has since been upgraded to stable.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified about the incident, the WPS said in a news release.

Milestone night for Big Sugar at the Burt Dec. 27

Big Sugar and their fans will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the band’s album Heated with a concert Dec. 27 at the Burton Cummings Theatre.

Tickets go on sale Friday, Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. at ticketmaster.ca. Prices haven’t been announced.

The Toronto blues-rock group released Heated, its fourth album, in 1998 and it went platinum after selling more than 100,000 copies in Canada. Guitarist and singer Gordie Johnson continues to lead the band, which will play the album in its entirety along with other hits and cuts from their 2022 record, Eternity Now.

Man’s 2018 disappearance being investigated as a homicide

RCMP suspect a Manitoba man who disappeared four years ago was the victim of a homicide.

Vernon Otto, who lived about 75 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg in Stead, vanished May 29, 2018, and his truck was found torched the following day.

RCMP said today the 66-year-old’s disappearance is being investigated as a homicide based on tips following a Sept. 13 appeal and evidence gathered in the last four years.

Police want to speak to people who saw or spoke to Otto between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. the day he disappeared.

14-year-old arrested after shots fired on Isabel

Winnipeg police arrested a 14-year-old boy after gunshots rang out on Isabel Street and Pacific Avenue Monday evening.

Police were called to the area for a report of the shots and a man armed with a gun at about 7 p.m., where officers, including the tactical and dog units, spotted an armed suspect. The suspect ran to a residence on the 500 block of Alexander Avenue, where police arrested him.

Officers seized a loaded .22 calibre rifle and ammunition from the home.

The 14-year-old will be charged with four firearms offences and was released on an undertaking.

Woman arrested after kitten stabbed

Winnipeg police arrested a woman accused of animal cruelty Monday afternoon.

Officers were called about an injured animal on the 700 block of Wellington Avenue at about 4 p.m., where they found a suspect and an eight-month-old kitten suffering “severe bodily injuries,” police said.

Officers arrested the suspect and took the kitten to a veterinary hospital, where it was euthanized after an emergency surgery.

Police believe the kitten had been stabbed, and that substance abuse played a role in the incident. A 29-year-old will be charged with killing or injuring an animal.

Jets make first training camp cuts

The Winnipeg Jets have made the first set of training camp cuts.

Forward Danny Zhilkin, defenceman Dmitry Kuzmin and goaltender Domenic DiVincentiti were all returned to their Ontario Hockey League teams on Tuesday afternoon.

Zhilkin will skate this year with the Guelph Storm, Kuzmin with the Flint Firebirds and DiVincentitis with the North Bay Battalion.

Winnipeg now has 47 skaters remaining in camp (27 forwards, 15 defencemen, five goaltenders). They must cut down to a maximum of 23 prior to the season-opener on Oct. 14 against the New York Rangers.
